Dawn Ellen Smith of Flora Vista, NM, passed away on April 15, 2023. She is survived by her husband, Mike Smith; three children, Jeremy Willey (Kendra), Amanda Martin (Jason), and Tanner Smith (Sarah); four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters and three brothers.
Dawn was a much-loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, educator, pet parent and cattlewoman with a strong Christian faith.
She was born in Tonawanda, New York, but moved (kicking and screaming) to southern New Mexico, where she earned a bachelor's degree in education from New Mexico State University. After teaching a few years in Columbus, NM, she moved to San Juan County, where she spent 23 years teaching high-school math to middle-school students in the Farmington School District.
In Farmington, Dawn also met "my champion" (to use her words), whom she eventually married and spent the next 29 years with, raising their children, building their home, and creating their memories. She enjoyed announcing team roping for her husband, coaching her oldest son in BMX, traveling with her daughter, coaching her youngest son in calf roping, being "Hunnee" to her grandchildren, singing with her siblings, and teaching pi (π) to her students. Later in life, she took up professional photography and began tending a small fold of Scottish Highland cattle.
She was always our biggest fan and will be greatly missed.
A memorial will be held on June 17, 2023, at 1:00pm at Summit Church (1200 E. 30th St., Farmington, NM 87401). Please refer to Farmington Funeral Home's website for further details. In lieu of flowers, Dawn asked donations be made to St. Jude's or Mercy Oncology.
