Donald (Bud) Victor Basinger, age 65, of Fruitland, NM, passed away peacefully at home on February 25, 2025.
Bud was born on September 28, 1959, in Ruidoso, NM, to Robert S. Basinger and Emma N. Mead. He grew up in Farmington, NM, and graduated from Farmington High School in 1975. On May 24, 1980, he married the love of his life, Sally Mae Radcliffe. Their love and devotion to each other and their children were later sealed for eternity in the Manti, UT, temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Bud was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sally, and their four children: Jared Basinger (Willie Bernal) of Fruitland, NM; Chance Basinger (Starlee) of Lehi, UT; Chad Basinger (Heather) of Farmington, NM; and Lindsay Smith (Colby) of Farmington, NM. His greatest joy in life was his six grandchildren, who he cherished beyond measure: Chandan (12), Eleanor (10), Avery (7), Maxwell (7), Camdan (3) and Carson.
He is preceded in death by a grandson, Carson; his parents, Robert S. Basinger and Emma N. Mead; his sister, Sandra; and multiple in-laws and nephews and nieces. He is survived by his siblings, Robert, Oliver (Debbie), Robin, Stephen (Vicki), and Mary, as well as numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved.
A mechanic and equipment operator by trade, but a farmer at heart, Bud had a gift for fixing anything that was broken. Whether it was an engine in need of repair or a fence that needed mending, he approached each task with skill and determination. But more than that, he was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need—especially his children. Whether it was moving, landscaping a yard, or tackling a remodeling project, Bud was the first to show up and the last to leave.
He had a deep love for the outdoors and found his greatest happiness fishing and hunting, particularly when he was with family and friends. Known for his quick wit and playful teasing, Bud had a way of lightening any mood, bringing laughter even in difficult times. He found immense joy in sharing the ‘farm’ with his grandkids, building and creating special projects just for them. He was also a skilled leather smith, crafting beautiful works with his hands.
Bud had a heart for service, whether as a volunteer at the local fire department, or more recently, through his time at the bishop’s storehouse and the Albuquerque LDS Temple. His kindness, selflessness, and unwavering faith left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
A public viewing will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 9:00 AM, followed by funeral services at 10:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 10 Rd 6523, Kirtland, NM 87417. He will be laid to rest at Memory Gardens in Farmington, NM.
Bud’s legacy of love, hard work, and service will live on in the hearts of his family and all who were blessed to know him. He will be deeply missed.
