Donald W. Varenhorst was born in Cook County, IL. to Frances and Bertha (Boken) Varenhorst. He graduated from Culver Military Academy, then made his way west as a young man, settling in the Land of Enchantment. During the 1960's he made Farmington his home before entering a position with NM State Highway Department in Santa Fe, where he met and married Marie DeVille in 1969. By the 1970's Donald and Marie became the owner-proprietors of Spruce Lodge in lovely Chama, where Don's enthusiasm for trains and photography grew and led him to become a founding member of "0306 Caboose Corp.," Offering luxury train excursions.
In the 1990's Donald and Marie chose to return to Farmington, owning several rental townhtown homesomes and residing on their small rancho and orchard.
Don was an award-winning marksman, a member of the NRA, and an officer of the local wildlife federation. An avid owner of sports cars, Don was also a member of the Porsche Club of America.
He is survived by his four nieces, brother-in-law and extended loving family.
A private service will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery.
