Drew Douglas Hazzard, 30, of Kirtland was released from the bonds of earth on Monday November 6th, 2017. Drew was born February 10th, 1987 in Farmington, NM to Paul and Angie Hazzard.  He was a 2005 graduate of Kirtland Central High School and continued his education at San Juan College earning his Associates degree in Liberal Arts. He then attended New Mexico State University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. Drew was a man with an endless list of talents and passions. He loved all genres of  music from Iron Maiden and Pink Floyd to the Eagles and the Beatles. As a movie buff, he was always first in line to see the newest Star Wars or Star Trek blockbuster and cherished the classics. He was an avid reader and lover of all books, especially Stephen King. From a young age, Drew demonstrated incredible artistic ability and imagination in his sketches, comics and paintings. Above all, Drew was known for his selflessness and his bleeding heart. He was constantly trying to make the world a better place and was a seeker of peace. He was always willing to give someone a safe ride home even if that meant breaking curfew. While attending San Juan College, he was a CNA and Activities Director at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, where he coordinated field trips and special outings for his residents and loved working with the elderly. After graduating from  NMSU, he wrote articles and participated in fundraising for a non-profit organization whose goal was to bring heightened awareness to help end world poverty and  the hunger epidemic in third world countries. He would give the shirt off his back and the last dollar from his pocket to a friend in need. Drew had an innate ability to make people laugh and his smile was contagious. His friends all agree that “he gave the absolute best hugs” and at 6’7” tall “his arms were so long they could almost wrap around you twice.” He was a loved and cherished son, brother, grandson, nephew, uncle and friend. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill Hazzard, G.T. and Lequetta West. Drew is survived by his parents Paul and Angie Hazzard, Sisters Shelby (Tyson) Uselman and Morgan ( Drew) VerHaar and his biggest fans-nieces and nephews- Jacob, Kaitlyn, Ashley, Scout and Adeline (due on his birthday) as well as his extended aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.  In lieu of flowers, please take your family to dinner and a movie, always remember to tip your server generously, read a book, enjoy time spent with your children or the elderly, help your fellow man, donate to any charity of your choice, make the world a better place.

There will be a graveside service at the Kirtland Fruitland Cemetery on Tuesday, November 14th at 11am with Brother Brett Puckitt officiating.
