On Wednesday, November 9, 2022, James (Jim) Doyle Matthews died peacefully, at the age of 85, surrounded by family, after a two-month battle with cancer. Jim called Farmington home for over 70 years. He graduated from Farmington High in 1955, and worked 30 years for El Paso Natural Gas.
In addition to his career, he served in the Army and was very active in the community. He coached baseball, basketball, and football - from PeeWee to the Connie Mack World Series. He delivered Meals on Wheels for about 20 years, refereed basketball games at the Boy's & Girl's Club, was a member of the Civitans Club, and volunteered for the Daily Bread and Frontline Mission. He was active at Bethany Christian Church, including serving on several committees.
Jim was a friend to many. He was known for his sense of humor, his intelligence, and his kind heart. He was always willing to help a friend in need.
Family was his priority. He is survived by Pat, his wife of over 60 years; son Gary Matthews; daughter Diana Reynolds (Tracy); and Lori Hower (Fabian); six adult grandchildren, Heather Lang (Mitch Alday), Breanna Stewart (Cole), Taylor Matthews (Kierstin), Matthew Smith (Felicity), Kayla Smith (Colin Miesen), Emma Linfield (Sean); and two great grandchildren, Josie and Henry Alday. He was preceded by his brother Claudie. He is survived by numerous cousins and many friends.
Jim had a very active social life, including weekly golf, card, and domino games. He once hit a hole in one. He attended church and hosted weekly family gatherings. He loved to cook.
