It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Oran Porter, Jr. John was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend to all, as well as a faithful servant of God. Throughout his life, John never ceased to amaze and inspire all who knew him with his strength, courage, and love for life. His family was always his top priority, and he worked tirelessly to provide the best life possible for them. In his final moments, John gave his family the gift of being able to care for him as he passed peacefully from this life to his eternal home in Heaven.
John faced many challenges in life, beginning at a young age, but these challenges never stopped him from maintaining a positive outlook and holding onto the hope that things could—and would—always get better. He was known for saying that we always have choices to make in life, and he was living proof that anyone can make choices that strengthen their lives. He believed we are not defined by the circumstances we’re born into. His honesty defined his character.
John is survived by his loving wife of nearly 40 years, Sherry Denise Porter, and two daughters: Kathy Lynn Porter and Michelle Dawn Porter. He is also survived by a large extended family, including five grand-puppies. John is preceded in death by his parents, John O. Porter, Sr. and Jewel LaNell Houston.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Lewy Body Dementia Association or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. The Porter family would like to extend their most heartfelt thanks to Guardian Angel Home Health and Hospice for their loving care and compassion, to the Arbors at Vista Living Care Center in Las Cruces, who helped give our family three extra years of quality time together, and to the hundreds of prayer warriors who prayed diligently over the last four years for our family.
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day...and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing." – 2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV)
