Jose Vicente Atencio

Jose “Vicente” Atencio Sr., 81, of Farmington passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, at Holy Cross Church in Santa Cruz, New Mexico. Vicente was born on July 15, 1943, in Cebolla, New Mexico, to Antonio R. and Susie E. Atencio. He was a 1963 graduate of Tierra Amarilla High School, subsequently drafted by the United States Armed Forces and entered the Army on May 7, 1965, where he served on active duty until April 1967 and in the reserves until May 6, 1971. He married the love of his life, Rosie Tinkham on July 2, 1967. Vicente was a member of the Labors International Union of North America for over 50 years. He was a loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who blessed the lives of everyone he met. He will be missed beyond measure and remembered for eternity.

He was preceded in death by his Grandparents: Justiniano and Cecilia Atencio and Antonio & Marcelina Archuleta; Parents: Antonio and Susie Atencio; Sister: Ernestine Locklear; Grandson: Cheyenne C. Archuleta; Nephew: Elijo Padilla Jr., Niece: Connie Padilla; and brothers-in-law: Paul Garcia, Gene Locklear, Donald Tinkham, Ricky Yardman, Larry Gallegos; sisters-in-law: Alice Tinkham, Carlotta Tinkham, Dorothy Tinkham, and Lola Sanchez; mother-in-law: Ruth Richards.

He is survived by his wife, Rosie Atencio of Farmington, son, Jose (Joey) Vicente Atencio Jr. (Anna) of Albuquerque, daughters: Tammie S. Tapia (Robert) of Farmington, NM, Alice M. Atencio (Paul) of Greeley, CO, and Melissa A. Faurot (Jay, III) of Columbia, MO; brothers, Juan Atencio (Lizzie) of Aztec, NM and Donald Atencio (Mary) of Kirtland, sisters, Maria Garcia of Arizona, Virginia Padilla (Elijo) of Truchas, NM, and Marcella Martinez (Larry) of Brazos, NM; grandchildren: Justin Atencio, Jeremy Atencio, Anna-Marie Donald (Andrew), Aubrey Tapia (Brittany), Melissa Martinez (Jacob), Brittney Atencio, Gunner Archuleta (Kyler), Mandy Faurot, Jacob “JT” Faurot, Jay Faurot IV (Kelly), Jared Faurot, Kyrie Faurot (Matt), Jessie Faurot; great-grandchildren: Alana Beasley, Jayda Beasley, Vincente “Vinny” Donald, Harper Donald, Mia Tapia, Daxton Tapia, Liam Martinez, Heaven Martinez, Aiden Martinez, Banks Archuleta, Kaysea Faurot; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. with funeral services to follow at 3:00 p.m. at Farmington Funeral Home. The family will also hold a funeral service on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at Mission Church of Santo Nino de Atocha in Cebolla, NM with burial immediately following at his family ranch 2 miles north.
