Laura C. DeVere
It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Laura C. (Brown) DeVere, 86, of Aztec, NM. She passed peacefully in the morning of November 7, 2023 with her children by her side.
Laura was welcomed into this world by her parents Leroy and Helen (Born) Brown on December 1, 1936. Born in a little house on a hill in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. She joined three older sisters, Crystal, Opal, and Roylene. The Browns moved to Durango where she later graduated from Durango High School in 1953 having listed her ambition in the Toltec as HOMEMAKER.
In June of 1954 she married her husband and best friend of 68 years, Ronald K. DeVere. In 1962 they built their home of 38 years in the West Animas Valley. They welcomed two children into their lives, Matthew Wayne in 1964 and Katrina Marie in 1966. She enjoyed spending time and traveling with family and friends, exploring the countryside, and spending summers at the family's cabin at Born Lake in Pagosa Springs. Laura was an amazing and avid gardener. Together, she and Ronald created one of the most beautiful properties in the Animas Valley. Along with being an incredible cook and baker, she was also a talented seamstress. She was a member of Eastern Star and an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Durango, CO. She began the Christmas bazaar that is still held annually at the church. Laura stayed home and raised her children until they reached High School and then she began a job with 9-R School District in the Miller JR High School cafeteria, later retiring as the Manager.
After moving to Aztec, NM in 2000 and building a home, Laura and Ron joined the First United Methodist Church of Farmington, NM and gained many great friends. They hosted their Sunday School Group with an annual picnic at the cabin and Valentine's Day Parties at their home. They joined Bethany Christian Church of Farmington, NM, again adding to the list of amazing friends. In her final months Laura voiced her desire to return to the Methodist Church.
Laura will be lovingly remembered by her son Matthew (Karen) DeVere, daughter Katrina (Ralph) Chiles; Grandchildren Timothy (Krystal) Werre, Anthony Werre, and Gregory (Samantha) DeVere, and four Great- Grandchildren; her eldest sister Crystal (Brown) Wall, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and many great friends.
