Matt Dean Ashworth

July 14, 1952 — September 7, 2022

Farmington

Matt Ashworth passed away peacefully at home on September 1, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was born July 14, 1952 in Hotel Dieu hospital, El Paso, Texas. Matt and Allen were identical twins. Then Mom and Dad moved to Farmington, New Mexico with 5 little children.  We roamed the hills north of 30th St with our dogs catching all kinds of things.

Matt graduated with his brother from FHS in 1970. They then went to NMSU and he graduated with a degree in Wildlife Management, 1974. He married the beautiful redhead, Nancy Fleming, in1976, and raised their two children, Randy and Dawn. They camped and picnicked, La Plata Canyon being a favorite. But a big trip was to Alaska where Nancy has family. Randy and Matt shared the love of the outdoors, fishing, hiking, hunting and DOGS.  Dawn and Matt shared their love of horses and DOGS. He and Dawn spent many an hour working and riding together with Sweetie! Matt loved his home and a good meal.

Many a mile in canyons, desert, mountains in the Southwest have been hiked and driven, looking for and at treasures by “The Brothers”. Matt and Allen were big fans of the Aggies, a good reason for a trip across state for the big game.

Matt worked for the Forest Service, PNM, City of Farmington and Farmington Schools for 6 years as a crosswalk guard.  He liked working and was an intelligent man. He was a gentle person and true friend. He was a Christian man who loved and cared about others. His church was an important part of his life.

Matt was preceded in death by his father James Ashworth, mother Nila Ashworth and brother David Ashworth. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Nancy Ashworth, son Randy Ashworth, and daughter Dawn (Steve) Russell and grandson JW along with his grandchildren Tina and Kamarohn.  Also left to deeply miss him will be his brothers and sisters:  Kim (Dennis) Williams, daughter Kelly Campbell, Steve Ashworth, sons Aaron Ashworth and Dylan Ashworth, Debbie (Dave) Harrison, daughters Holly (Kelly) Kerkes and Heather Harrison. And his twin brother Allen Ashworth, son, Adam Ashworth (Katie) Nieces and nephews are Audra and AJ Ashworth, Hannah and Fiona Kerkes, and Marisa and Jordan Loraas.
