Patricia Huggins

October 2, 1934 — March 2, 2025

Mrs. Patricia Huggins, age 90 of La Plata, New Mexico, Passed away on Sunday Mach 2, 2025. Patricia was born on October 2, 1934, in Farmington, New Mexico to Goldie A. Chapman and Roberta Childers Chapman.

Pat spent her early childhood on a farm near Farmington. She loved animals and enjoyed riding horses and swimming in the nearby river. At an early age she was relocated to Hobbs where she really missed the freedom of the outdoor life she had loved. She later moved to Oregon with her mother and sibling but lost her mother at the age of 12. After that, she spent several years in the care of numerous relatives and lived in different locations across the U.S. until she was reunited with her father and greatly enjoyed taking care of her younger siblings. She decided at a young age that she would marry a farmer and first spotted him on the FFA float in Farmington. It took several years and the Korean War before they were married in 1954. They were blessed with their son Kenny and their daughter Darlene and continued her dream by raising their family on a farm in La Plata. After her children started school, Pat decided that she would like to work near home so she and her husband Kenneth purchased the La Plata Store. They ran the store together and Pat was the Post Master as well. During this time they purchased the farm adjacent to the family farm. In time to come, they also purchased a ranch and Forrest Permit near Pagosa Springs, CO. Pat’s passion was to head to Colorado on the weekends and check on her cows and her nieces Kora and Berta were thrilled to go along as much as they could. She had a lifelong love for animals and especially took joy in checking her baby claves each spring. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren, Jerry, Bethany, Kaleb, Josh, Jamie, and Jonah and her great-grandchildren Levi, Luke, and Kellan and was so proud of them all. After 18 years they sold the store and Pat tackled a new challenge by obtaining her Realtor License. At age 70 she decided to retire and began the best years of her life spending everyday with Kenneth taking care of their farm, cattle, and each other.

Pat had a very strong faith in God and found great purpose in praying for her loved ones, especially her family. Her love of caring for others never ended, she was an unbelievably dedicated caretaker to Kenneth through his illness and missed him dearly. Even as she grew older and life got harder she was still loving and giving to her family and never stopped praying for all of them.

She was preceded in death by her parents Goldie and Roberta: Brothers: Sonny Chapman and Bobbie Chapman. Sisters: Goldie Walker, Barbara Barns and Stepsisters, Florence Lutz and Mary Glen. Patricia is survived by her Son, Kenny Huggins and Daughter, Darlene (Andre) Worrell. Grandchildren: Jerry (Tracy) Huggins, Bethany (Matt) Ray, Kaleb Hodgson, Josh Huggins, Jamie (Johnny) Fenn, and Jonah (Bree) Huggins. Great-Grandchildren: Levi Whitley, Luke Whitley and Kellan Ray.
