Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Jean Weaver, 82 passed away peacefully at home in Farmington, NM, February 1, 2025. She was born in Denver, Colorado, on April 6, 1942, to Philip Edward Morey Nollsch and Ethel Pauline Huffman Nollsch.
Jean arrived in Farmington in 1951, with her parents and her brother, Clarence (Bud) when her father took a position as Parts Department Manager at Farmington Motor Company, the Ford Garage at 126 West Main Street, which was owned by Ernest Bruss. Due to a population boom, because of the oil industry, there was no housing available which required the family to live in the Zia Motel behind the A & W Drive-in on West Main Street for three months.
Jean attended the fourth grade at Swinburne Elementary School, continued at McKinley Elementary School and graduated from Farmington High School with the class of 1960. Jean graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Denver, CO, in 1963, as a Registered Nurse. Her mother Ethel, graduated from the same school of nursing in 1934, the hospital where Jean was born. Jean, her husband, her children, and her brother all graduated from Farmington High School.
Jean worked as an Evening (3:00-11:00 PM) Charge Nurse at San Juan Hospital (now San Juan Regional Medical Center), in various doctors’ offices, and as a First Aid Nurse for sub-contractors at the power plants Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) and Arizona Public Service Company (APS). She was assigned the duty of setting up the first Intensive Care Unit and San Juan Hospital in 1968. Prior to returning to Farmington in 1968, she also worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver, CO, from 1963 to 1964. St. Luke’s Hospital in Phoenix, AZ from 1964 to 1966 and the University of Kentucky Medical Center Hospital in Lexington, KY, from 1966 to 1968. She considered herself to be a traveling nurse before the phenomenon of traveling nurses (which began in the late 1970’s). Her specialties were the Intensive Care Unti and the Surgical Ward. She worked up to and beyond the due date when her children were born and eventually retired in the 1980’s to raise her children full time.
Jean and Thomas W. Weaver met in January 1970, at San Juan Hospital when Tom was working as the on-call evening Lab Technician after returning to Farmington when he completed his tour of duty in Vietnam with the United States Marine Corps. They married August 30, 1970, by Reverend A. Daryl Harp, at the Abundant Life Temple, a non-denominational church then located at 2016 East 16th Street in Farmington. They lived their entire married life in Farmington. Tom began his college education after marriage, graduating from San Juan College in Farmington, at Ft. Lewis College in Durango, CO, in 1975, eventually becoming self-employed owning Photo-Synthesis Photography in 1988.
Jean enjoyed serving her Lord Jesus after receiving Jesus as her Savior and Lord in 1966. She volunteered for various church activities such as teaching Sunday School and organizing the Prayer Ministry. She enthusiastically shared the Bible with others, and she wanted others to have a love relationship with God and Jesus in order to experience the resulting joy of peacefulness.
Jean took great pleasure in listening to music, especially that from the 1950’s and the Bill and Gloria Gaither Homecoming Series. Her signature song was “Because He Lives” by the Gaither’s. She never relocated without loading her stereo player and her 45 records and 33&1/3 LP albums in her ’56 Chevy to take along with her. She relished in the fact that her brother and her son were accomplished alto saxophone players, her favorite musical instrument. She also enjoyed jeeping and rock climbing with her family in the Chokecherry Canyon and making memory albums for her family and the FHS Class of 1960. Paramount to her was her husband and children whom she was very dedicated.
Jean is survived by her husband Tom of 54 years; one daughter Shandra and her husband Michael D. Smith of Farmington; one son, Jon Weaver and his wife Virginia Weaver and their son Thomas Neal Weaver and their daughter Amelia Ruby Weaver.
Jean was preceded in death by her 62-year old mother, Ethel, in 1975, and her 94-year-old father, Phil in 2006 (on her brother’s 70th birthday, June 28).
A private family graveside service with Pastor Brent Heddin officiating will be held at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Farmington (date to be determined). The Family requests that donations be made in Jean Weaver’s name to Desert Heights Church, 1835 E. Main Street, Farmington, NM.
