Ralph Trotter

Ralph Trotter, a cherished husband, father, and community member, passed away October 19, 2024 in Farmington, NM at age 75. Born on April 2, 1949 in Richmond, VA to Capt William O. and Verna "Bunny" Trotter, Ralph was a true explorer of life from his earliest days. His childhood as an army brat saw him traversing from El Paso, TX to Panama before settling down in Oakland, CA where he graduated from high school in 1967. It was in Oakland that Ralph's athletic prowess shone through as a varsity letterman in both football and baseball, and his love for music and surfing flourished.

Ralph's dedication to service was evident when he joined the Army, serving in the Military Police from 1968 to 1971. He served in Vietnam with the Fourth Infantry Division from 1968-1969. Upon returning stateside he married his high school sweetheart, Virginia, and the couple moved to Farmington in 1971. Ralph seamlessly transitioned to a career in law enforcement, serving with distinction at both the Farmington Police Department and the San Juan County Sheriff's Office. He retired in 1994 as the Under Sheriff of San Juan County.

Beyond his professional life, Ralph was deeply rooted in his community and faith, actively participating in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a loving presence in the lives of many, always ready to lend a hand or share a moment of joy. His hobbies included spending quality time with his family, playing music, enjoying games with friends, and playing golf.

Ralph is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia Trotter; sons Sean Trotter (Juliann) and their children Madison and Riley, and Tim Trotter (Michelle) and their children Brailey and Adelyn; brother Bill Trotter; and in-laws Martha Flynn, and Gill and Colleen Flynn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Capt. William O Trotter and Verna "Bunny" Carneal Trotter.

Mass is scheduled for Friday, October 25. Rosary at 9:30 AM and Mass at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 410 N Allen, Farmington.
