Roger Dale Nixon, age 75 of Farmington passed away on Saturday September 14, 2024. He was born on September 1st, 1949, to Robert and Fern Nixon in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. At the age of 19 in 1969 Roger was drafted into the United States Army where he served in Charley Company 1-22 infantry 4th Infantry Division in the Vietnam war. Where he earned a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/ 60 DVC, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert M-14 Rifle, One Overseas bar. Roger was Honorably discharged in August of 1975. After returning from overseas due to combat injury he was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas CO C 1st Battalion 18th Inf 1st Inf Div. It was during this time that he met June Lara Marie Miner while visiting his home state of Iowa. Roger said it was love at first sight. They were married on October 17th, 1971. They spent the next 50 years together until her death on November 17th, 2021.

Roger worked many jobs over the years in several different fields, packing plants, construction, farming, spending most of his life in the oilfield. He worked in the oilfield industry in Williston N.D and then followed the oil boom to Farmington in August of 1987. In 2011 Roger retired from the oilfield and took a year off to travel. Then in 2012 he took a part-time job with Farmington Municipal Schools as an activity bus driver. This was something Roger was very proud of and enjoyed doing. He loved working with the Coaches and kids. He loved to give his co-workers a "hard time" and watching the sport events.

Roger and his wife June were members of the Oasis church from their arrival in Farmington. Roger served part of that time as deacon, children church leader and bus ministry leader all with June by his side. He had a great sense of calling when it came to children ministries and enjoyed taking his grand and great grandchildren to church.

God and family came first in Roger's heart. He put his heart and soul into caring for them till the end. Always there for anyone that needed him. He was extremely proud of Kally, Devin and Ryan for their Military service. He loved and was proud of all his grandkids and great grandkids.

Anyone who knew Roger knew that he loved to go fast. He built and raced cars most of his adult life and was track champion at Aztec and Cortez speedways in 2009. He loved hotrods and riding his Goldwing in his younger years, completing several 1000 mile runs through the black hills.

Roger was preceded in death by his father and mother, brother David, grandsons Shelby, Dillion and Sheldon Eller and wife June Nixon. He is survived by his two daughters Carrie Eller and Cara Nixon (Robert). Beloved son in laws Richard Eller and Aaron Kemp. Grandchildren Kally (Heather) Renee (Pat) Destiny (Luke) Devin (Taryn) Ryan (Brooklyn) Daelynn (Jesus) Hally (Patrick) Zackary (Natlie) and Gaige. Great Grandchildren Harlee, Amberlee, Annielynn, Aralynn, Axxton and KaceyLea. Roger had many other "adopted grandchildren, all the kids called him Papa Roger. Sisters Verna, Pearl and Bobbie. Brothers Mark (Becky) and Mike (Deb)


Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Friday September 20, 2024 at Farmington Funeral Home, 2111 W. Apache St. Farmington. Viewing and Visitation with the family will be on Friday at 9:00 am prior to funeral services.
