Roy Charles Waters

Roy Charles Waters, age 81, of Farmington, NM passed away on September 13, 2024, in Farmington, NM. Roy was born in Fort Defiance, AZ on April 27, 1943, to Norris Jacob Waters and Margeret E. Johnson.  

Roy graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering and a Master’s of Science in Structural Engineering. Seeking out international work, he joined Chicago Bridge and Iron as an engineer and director of construction. Roy met his wife D’Ann while at UNM, and together they travelled the world for 11 years. Roy worked mainly in northern Pakistan and Iran, though their travels together also encompassed adventures in Curaçao, Puerto Rico, Ceylon, Nepal, Afghanistan, and the United Kingdom.

Roy moved back to his boyhood home of Farmington, New Mexico in 1980. He retired from Central Consolidated Schools as the Director of Construction, and through his engineering consulting business continued to work with the Kirtland Central Consolidated Schools and Aztec Schools as a consulting engineer. A lifelong engineer, retirement did not sit well with him, and he worked with the City of Farmington as an engineer in the electrical department for the last ten years of his life. Roy always said that 'If you did something you loved, you’d never work a day in your life.' He worked as an engineer until his last day.

Roy loved animals, especially dogs. Roy loved flying since college. He loved playing golf, spending times in the mountains of southern Colorado, and collecting coins and rocks. In his later years, he could be found taking daily walks along the Animas River trails. 

Roy joined the Catholic faith at the Sacred Heart parish, oversaw the church's renovation, and will find his final rest there. 

Roy is preceded in death by his parents Norris J Waters, Margaret E (Johnson) Waters. 

Roy is survived by his wife Dorothy Ann (D’Ann) Waters, son Sean, daughter-in-law Allison, grandchildren (Rowan) Faith and Lucas Waters. His elder brother Norris Alan Waters (Yuma, AZ) and nephew Dale Waters (Dubai, UAE) also survive him. 

Rosary followed by a service at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the Sacred Heart parish. Roy will be interred at the columbarium at Sacred Heart. A reception at the Sacred Heart Family Center will follow at 11:00 a.m. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials/donations can be made in Roy's name to the Farmington Animal Shelter or a charity of your choice.
